OUT ON HIS OWN
COMMENDATION THE ST- LEGER FIELD OPPOSITION IS MODERATE If ever a horse stood out on his own in a race, and that a classic * contest, it is surely Commendation in the Great Northern St. Leger at Ellerslie on Monday. Eight others stand their ground against the crack, but they figure as small fish indeed against the champion. However, many owners, quite aware that their horse hasn’t the proverbial dog’s show, are loyal to the club and the principle contained in the retention of the classic contest, and so feel in honour bound to find a horse to make up a field. To these it is a case of hats off. But, as in any other sport, there are others who do not see eye to eye with this. PAYING FOR TEA That, now, is simply by the way, and has very little bearing on the St. Leger set down for decision on Monday next. Commendation continues to dominate the situation in most convincing manner, and it is more than likely that his price in the event of his winning will pay for two or three afternoon teas, no more. And that is good odds when one is desirous of supporting the Limond gelding against .the field. The field, in this instance, contains quality sufficient to make a fine race with Commendation out of it, and if the expected happens there should be quite a close contest for the minor places. Hynanna may be the elect of backers for those who endeavour to place the second horse, for Lady Desmond met with a minor mishap during the week that might very well cost her some stake money. However, a better line on her prospects can be gleaned after witnessing her effort in the Oaks this afternoon.
