LUCK OF THE GAME
SOLD FOR A SONG THEN WON FOUR ON END It is maintained l?y some that luck is nothing more than good, judgment This is as may be, but there is nothing surer than that luck plays an all-im-portant part in the racing game just as much as it does in cards. An apt illustration was given very recently in the case of a man resident in a progressive North Island centre. This man came in for a small fortune not so long ago, and he began to look round for something to invest in. He had a few sporting friends, and not being loth at having his own little bit qn the geegees when they were expected to go extra fast, he was persuaded to buy a horse, one that had been racing for soms seasons. The dead was completed at a small price, and his remaining cash went in on the horse in its first race. Paying nearly three figures for a win, the horse came along with a rattle in the straight and was only “pipped” a nose and a head to get third. The next two starts were failure, principally through indifferent riding, after which the owner, with what appeared to be good judgment, prepared to. cut his losses and parted with his horse for a mere song— £ 18. What did that equine do in his very next up? He romped home a winner, and not content with this he carried on the game, with the result that he won four races on end, capturing nearly £4OO in stakes. And all this within days. The present owner of the hors'e thinks the racing game is a great institution. It doesn’t matter what the previous owner’s views are; lie is too attending to his business.
