SMART TRANS-SHIPPING.— One of the smartest pieces of transhipping seen for some time was performed last week on Princes Wharf. The Canadian Challenger had a consignment of 350 tons of 561 b. rails for the Matahina Tramways, Ltd., of the Bay of Plenty, and arrangements were made with Messrs Winstone, Ltd, to tranship them to the Mount, Tauranga. The shipment, as usual, was loaded in the various holds and could not be discharged overside, direct into the scows, necessitating delivery on to the wharf. Arangements were made with Messrs Nearing and Co., the local stevedores, and as delivery was made, so the rails were run alongside of the scows, and the whole transhipment was completed in two days. The handling of such a consignment in so short a time reflects great credit on the port of Auckland, and certainly does credit to the organisation concerned.

NEW MOTOR SHIPS. —The Commonwealth and Dominion Line’s new motor ship Port Fremantle, built by Messrs. Workman, Clark and Co., of Belfast, was launched in January, and will sail from London for Australian ports on April 28. This vessel is 475 ft long and 63ft in breadth. She has a dead weight of 11,700 tons, and a speed of 14 knots. The Commonwealth and Dominion Line have found the Doxford opposed cylinder type of engine so successful that they have had similar engines placed in the Port Fremantle. The full designation of these is: Two sets of four cylinders, two stroke-cycle, solid, injection Doxford opposed piston engines. They are constructed by Messrs. William Doxford and Sons, of Sunderland, and installed by the ship-builders.

In addition to the Port Fremantle, the company has two others under construction—the Port Huon and Port Gisborne —which will be completed at the end of the summer. These are being built by. Messrs. Swan, Hunter and Wigham, Richardson, of Newcastle. One will have Doxford engines and the other Sulzer. All these three cargo vessels will have provision for 12 passengers—four single berths and four double berths. They will have 300,000 cubic feet of refrigerated space, and will run to about 8,000 tons gross. Each will have five holds. They will be electric ships throughout. Windlasses, refrigerating machinery, cooking, lighting, and heating will all be run by electricity. They will have cruiser sterns, two masts, and single funnel, the funnel being used for ventilation and silencer.
