TOWN ON A CLIFF
Full of interest is the town of Monaco, built on a towering cliff that rises sheer out of the blue waters of the Mediterranean. About 2,000 people live on the rock, which was a haunt of pirates in the Middle Ages, for here they could bring their booty and share their gains without the smallest fear of capture or pursuit. Monaco is the capital of a State with the same name, a State in miniature, for it has an area of only eight square miles, with an average width of 650yds. A golf ball, in three strokes, could be driven right across the State. Monaco has its own coinage and postage stamps, and an army consisting of 105 men. In the same State is Monte Carlo, where great fortunes are lost and won, and there is more excitement and tragedy there than in any other place in the world. It is a land of wealth and squalor, dancing saloons and brilliant concert halls, and one of the most picturesque places on the shores of that far-famed sapphire sea.
