TAMAKI AND ORAKEI
LINKING WITH AUCKLAND Tamaki and Orakei Hoad District electors and ratepayers have been for some time considering the advisability of amalgamating with Auckland City. In October last the position was represented to the City Council, which was asked to state whether it would be favourable to amalgamation in the event of the ratepayers agreeing to an amalgamation proposal. The council has since fully considered the matter, and last evening a recommendation from the Standing Committee, that if the ratepayers in Tamaki area, including Orakei district, were favourable, no objection would be made by the council to an unconditional amalgamation. Tamaki contains 5,700 acres, with a population at last census of 3,431. Orakei is being subdivided for suburban residences, and contains an area of 690 acres. Statistics covering Tamaki are: Rateable capital value, £1,685,705; unimproved, £1,141,203; number of buildings, 913; electors, 1,750. When the recommendation came up. Councillor Entrican pointed out that, much of Orakei was Government land, and there was a serious question of their liabilities as to rating, roading, sewerage, etc. Councillor Eady was surprised at a suggestion of bargaining. They must be prepared for some small sacrifice with a view to increased settlement and rating later. Councillor Allum pointed out that this was not the first time this matter had come forward. Tamaki had declined to come in last time. The report was adopted.
