NEW YORK SPECTACLE
A GIGANTIC TORCH SCAFFOLDING IN FLAMES By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright NEW YORK, Tuesday. One o£ the most spectacular fires in the history of New York occurred this evening, when a blaze, the origin of which is unknown started on the thirty-eighth floor of the new Netherland Hotel, a building 44 storeys high, in Fifth Avenue. The hotel, which was in process of construction, was surrounded on all sides by the immense wooden scaffolding, which quickly ignited, and made the building one huge torch. The flames illuminated the whole city, and caused the traffic to be stopped tor miles around, as the embers fell into the neighbouring streets. The firemen could not fight the fire, as the water had not been laid on to the building, and their hoses were torn to bits under the downward pressure of gravity and the upward pressure from the force of the pumps which were used in an attempt to lift the water from the street level. Great beams which were burning fiercely tell from a height of 500 feet above the street and crashed like cannon balls, 'endangering the lives of the firemen. —A. and N.Z.
