DODGING DEATH
I MADMAN ON RAILWAY NEARLY RUN DOWN ARRESTED ON SPIRAL (From Our Oxen Correspondent.) NATIONAL PARK, To-day. Samuel Jones spent the early hours of this morning dodging death in or about the tunnels of the Raurimu Spiral. The driver of a south-bound train reported at 1.30 a.m. to the National Park station officials that a man was nearly run down on the Spiral. He was seen again at 6.30 a.m. by the driver of another train at the entrance to the tunnel at Raurimu. The police were informed, and a man giving the name of Samuel Jones, was arrested on the Spiral. He was unable to give a satisfactory account of his movements. It is believed that he had been recently discharged from a mental hospital. He had in his possession a ticket from Thorndon to Auckland. Apparently he did not leave any train at the National Park and must have jumped off as the train was descending the Spiral.
