WORKLESS MAN’S COMPLAINT
DEPARTMENT’S REPLY A complaint from one of the unemployed in the city, made to THE SUN Office yesterday, that he had been refused a position by the Government Labour Bureau, was referred to the officer in charge this morning. It was stated that the man had been given a position with the Public Works Department at Westfield at 12s a day. He worked for about a week and then threw up the job and came back to Auckland. It was stated this morning that there were some men who preferred to loaf about the streets rather than take a job. The department had a great deal to do in endeavouring to place men, and if they would not work, even although the wages might be lower than thjey wanted, the policy of the department was not to accept their names again, but give what work there was to men who were willing to earn something and who were really in earnest to get employment.
