MANUKAU COUNTY
COUNCIL MEETING TO-DAY SOUTH ROAD CONCRETING The monthly meeting of the Manukau County Council was held to-day in the Council Chambers, Shortland Street, the chairman, Mr. F. M. Waters, presiding. ENGINEER’S REPORT The engineer, Mr. J. R. Page, reported that work was proceeding with the concreting of the Great South Road. Difficulty had been found with certain detours and side-tracks in wet weather. In this connection a resolution was passed authorising the chairman, the Papakura riding member and the county engineer, to act in the matter of the use of a quick-drying cement on portions of the Great South Road in the vicinity of the Papakura stream bridge so as to have this stretch available with the least possible delay. SPEEDING The chairman referred to the large amount of speeding by motorists that took place on the Great South Road in the Papakura and Papatoetoe ridings. He had known cases, personally, where motorists had travelled at 50 miles per hour on this stretch. There had been several accidents and it was certainly made dangerous by these people. It was decided to pay £SO annually towards the salary of a traffic inspector on the Otahuhu, Papatoetoe and Manurewa ridings. PAPAKURA STREAM The inspector reported that the condition of the Papakura stream was very much improved, and good work had been done by most of the owners abutting the creek. It was decided to issue further notices to defaulters notifying them to clear their portions of the stream. The chairman was appointed to represent the council on a deputation to wait on the Minister of Railways re the duplication of the railway line to Papakura. The District Highways Council wrote advising that the Main Highways Board had agreed to make the sum of £SOO available for the maintenance of detour Toads pro rata*
