EASTER SPORTS

LIST OF FIXTURES

A VARIED PROGRAMME N.Z. VARSITY TOURNAMENT Followers of outdoor sports will have plenty of attractions with which to occupy their attention during the Easter holidays. One of the most important events is the New Zealand Universities annual Easter sports tournament, which will commence on Saturday. The boxing and tennis will commence on Saturday, and a boat race between Auckland and Wellington will be rowed in the afternoon. An anonymous donor has generously given four cups, to be held by the winning crew each year, subject to the rules drawn up by the tournament committee. A cricket match is also being played between the two North Island universities, and as both colleges are represented by strong sides, including representative players, this should be a match well worth seeing. The big event in the bowling world is the Easter fours tournament, under the auspices of the Auckland Centre. Play will commence to-morrow on the St. Heliers, Auckland, Ponsonby, Devonport, Mount Albert and Carlton greens. Inter-section play will commence at Remuera next Tuesday. A start will be made with the Auckland provincial golf championships at Middlemore on Saturday. Over a hundred entries have been received, and competition promises to be particularly keen. The Suburban Cricket Association’s final championship match will be played tit the Domain to-morrow between United Suburbs and Harbour Board, and various other matches will be played. Tlie final of the Auckland Cricket Association’s third grad© competition will also be played at Eden Park to-morrow. Tennis tournaments will be held during the holidays at Northcote, Birkenhead and Hamilton. Various cricket and football tours have been arranged to different parts of the province, and even further afield. Two Auckland soccer teams will compete in a tournament at Palmerston North, a cricket match between an Auckland team and the South Auckland representatives is to he played at Hamilton, and several football clubs are making trips to country centres.

’VARSITY BOXERS

THE BIG TOURNEY All of the university colleges are represented by exceptionally good men in the boxing section of the big tournament. The final contests will take place in the Town Hall on Saturday evening. The teams are: OTAGO iP. N. Ferguson, at present the featherweight champion, who defeated 11. A. Chester last year after a great fight, will be a handy man for the Otago team. L. C. Cotter, lightweight champion of 1925, debated last year by F. R. Davis of Canterbury (present champion) is this year representing in the welterweight. J. S. Batchelor, Otago provincial middleweight champion last year, will represent in the heavyweight. He is cool and a very determined boxer.| CANTERBURY R. A. Chester, F. R. Davis and A. R. Smith are the only last year’s representatives of Canterbury Univers ity College again fighting. Davis is the present lightweight champion and is a clever boxer. Smith has risen from middleweight to heavyweight. WELLINGTON The featherweight, W. E. Wilson, represented Wellington in 1925 and on that occasion he was the only one of the Victoria University men to last a whole fight. G. Richardson, the lightweight, was defeated by Cotter last year. He is regarded as an awkward man to fight and does not get at all rattled. F. Desmond, representing in the welter, has in his time held a New Zealand amateur title and toured with the New Zealand team to Australia in 1921. He is a most scientific boxer, but through lack of training was last year defeated in the final by F. W. Petre, 1925-1926 champion. In the heavyweight Platts-Mills, the smiling boxer, will make himself known. He was defeated last year by J. T. Burrows, but he has plenty 3f stamina and can take a punch as well as give one. AUCKLAND Auckland has a stronger team this year than for some time past. Of course V. C. Rickard, bantam, is the star. He put up an exceptionaly good fight against F. Taylor (N.Z. bantam) on the night of the Grime-Trowern conest, and is improving with every fight. He was featherweight champion in 1925. The rest of the team are all new members. J. C. Willis, middleweight, is the Auckland provincial champion and should give a good account of himself. G. K. Stubbs, feather, is a boxer of peculiar style and represented Auckland in the bantam and featheweights in 1924. He packs a. good punch and is a dangerous opponent. ’VARSITY FOOTBALL NEW ZEALAND V. SYDNEY Reed. 11.55 a.m. SYDNEY, Wednesday. The New Zealand Universities’ Rugby team to visit Sydney in the coming season plays its first game on May IS, against a Manly team. On May 21 there will be a match combined universities' team v. New South Wales. On May 25, May 28 and June 1 the New Zealand team will play three tests against Sydney University.— A. and N.Z.
