WEDDING TRAGEDY

THE GISBORNE MURDER INQUEST OPENED Press Association GISBORNE, To-dav. An inquest has been opened by Mr. E. C. Levry, S.M., the coroner, into the deaths of Mrs. Queenie Eleanor Pettit and George Edward Nowell, the victim and perpetrator of the recent shooting in Hirini Street. Medical evidence was first taken as to the nature of the injuries. Mrs. Pettit, a guest at a wedding in Hirini Street, was on April 1 shot by Nowell, dying immediately. The shot came through the window. The deed was done by Nowell, an Englishman. It is thought tlkat he mistook Mrs. Pettit for the bride (Mrs. James Oman), for whom he had developed an infatuation, and whom he had threatened if she married. Nowell committed suicide.
