LECTRIC SIGNALS ON THE RAILWAYS
\N EFFICIENT SYSTEM ORK IN AUCKLAND DISTRICT (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. After the experience of Australia in e matter of signals at railway crossgs, Mr. H. J. Wynne, signal and ectrical engineer to the New Zeand Railways, is convinced that the jminion is on the right lines in opting the automatic wig-wag sigJ, which has been installed at many the crossings throughout this eouiiy. This method, he said on his rern to Wellington to-day, has been iproved by the road-travelling public ■nerally over the other side of the isman. In the more thickly populated area and this problem is greater in the tmmonwealth than in New Zealand gates, or overhead bridges have to i provided to divert the traffic off the casings. Automatic electric signals on the ilway track itself also claimed the tention of Mr. Wynne, who said that e extension of the system over New island lines was proceeding in acjrdance with the money available, he Auckland-Otahuhu section was ready complete, and was being exndsd to Mercer. This length, would robalsly be done within the next onth or two. Later the signals auld be taken down to Frankton—obably some time next year—and timately right through the trunk le. The installation of this system, alDUgh costly at the outset, was the ost economical in the long run, beluse the lines were enabled to carry greater volume of traffic and the ains were able to travel with eater frequency.
