TIMBER TRADE
INFLUENCE ON HOUSING SUGGESTION TO COUNCIL Being of the opinion that any protection granted to the New Zealand timber industry is likely to be further reflected in an increase in the cost of living, the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce agreed yesterday afternoon to send the following resolution forward to the City Council: — “ That, in view of the fact that the only element in the cost of living which is increasing under present conditions is housing costs, and that any increased protection granted to the local timber industry is likely to be reflected in an increase in the cost of living, the council commends to the earnest consideration of the Auckland City Council the present parlous condition of the New Zealand timber trade, and suggests that the difficulties under which that trade at present labours may be largely obviated by the permission for use in weather boarding above the plinth of seasoned clean 0.8. rimu, seasoned clean 0.8. totara and seasoned medium kauri.” The president, Mr. A. G. Lunn, said he had reason to believe that the chamber would have the support of the Institute of Architects, provided a standard classification of timbers was adopted; a standard definition of seasoning adopted; and providing a guarantee of seasoning was given by the sawmillers. It was agreed to embody these safeguards in the motion, which was carried.
