DOMINION’S TRADE BALANCE IMPROVES
IMPORTS STILL IN EXCESS Press Association. WELLINGTON, To-day. Trade figures for the financial year ended March 31, 1927, show an adverse balance of over £2,500,000, despite the fact that during the last quarter there was an increase of over £400,000 in the value of exports and a decrease of nearly £1,700,000 in imports as compared with the corresponding quarter of the previous year. The excess of imports for the financial year 192627 was £4,328,269, so that the total excess of imports for the two financial years is over £6,800,000. There was a shrinkage of imports last year of £4,833,186, as compared with 1925-26, which means that traders have handled far less merchandise, affecting their turnover and profits. There was a fall in the value of exports last year of £3,015,249, as compared with 1925-26, which means that the spending power of the people and principally of farmers has been restricted.
