“I’VE BEEN STARVING”

MAINTENANCE DEFAULTER’S MAGISTRATE UNSYMPATHETIC Tears welled to the eyes of a man in the witness box at the Magistrate’s Court this morning as he received a straight talk from Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., and the intimation that such men as he, who refused to support their wives and family, should go to gaol. “I have been practically starving,” he averred, “and I had four operations in 1921 —” Mr. Hunt: Never mind the operations, they didn’t stop you marrying another woman as soon as you got your divorce. Witness: I will have to file in bankruptcy and I have a writ here for £2-00 that I can’t meet.

The magistrate adjourned the case for two weeks pending further inquiries.
