STATUS OF CHAIRMAN ANIMALS’ PROTECTION SOCIETY “What right have you to be in the ! chair?” the chairman was asked at last night’s annual meeting in Auckland of the Society for the Px-evention of Cruelty to Animals. “I have every right,” replied Mr. W. C. Jenkins, from the chair. “I want this meeting run on constitutional lines and I will be dictated to by nobody!” A lively debate followed as to the status of the chairman. Mr. Jenkins explained that before the society’s incorporation it was known as The Animal Welfare League. “Therefore, it could not take the name of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.” he declared. - The meeting, he said, was to elect another committee. The first president was the Rev. Jasper Calder. The secretary read Mr. Calder’s resignation, and it was eventually decided that Mr. Jenkins should remain in the chair. The following officers were elected: Patron, the Governor-General. Six* Charles Fergusson; president, Mr. C. IT. Furness; vice-presidents. Sir George Elliot, Canon Percival James, the Hon. George Fowlds, Mr. Justice Stringer, Mr. V. R. Meredith, Mrs. Noble, and Messrs. J. Ewan. A. Bankart. A. E. Kernot, G. H. Wilson and J. B. Donpld.

Committee: Messrs L. E. Rhodes, J B. Paterson, J. Armstead, J. A. Ward C. Lindesay, A. McLean, Mrs. Kernot and the Misses Elsie K. Morton, A Trevithick, Sophia Hoffman, P. Hawlev and M. Knight; treasurer, Mr. R Arthur.
