POPPY DAY

NEXT FRIDAY WEEK Arrangements for the annual Poppy Pay were completed this morning at a meeting of the Mayoress’s Poppy Day Committee. The secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Mr. E. H. Sharp, advised that this year the allocation would be: 80 per cent, to the disabled men and needy fit men, and 20 per cent, to the Veterans’ Home. The increase to .80 per cent, is in anticipation of difficult conditions this winter. Advice was also given that on the evening of Poppy Day the Strand Theatre would provide a special programme, headed by the feature, “Every Mother’s Son,” and would donate a percentage of the takings to the Poppy Day funds. Last year 29,000 poppies were sold In Auckland, and the funds collected totalled approximately £1.570. It is hoped to increase these figures this year.
