TAMAKI BRIDGE
OPPOSITION TO SCHEME POLL ASKED FOR That the erection of the proposed bridge over the Tamaki River at Otahuhu was not warranted was the opinion arrived at by ratepayers in the Pakuranga and Turanga ridings of the Manukau County Council at meetings held on Saturday evening. At the Pakuranga meeting, Mr. J. S. Dickson, M.P., presided. He stated that the question of a new bridge had been brought up two years ago, when a petition urging its erection was signed by 92 persons. In discussion it was pointed out that as the bridge would not be of use to the Pakuranga ratepayers the riding should not be required to meet any of the cost. A resolution was passed expressing the opinion that the bridge was unnecessary and that the riding was not justified in contributing to the cost. A committee was also set up to act with Mr. Dickson in portecting the interests of the ratepayers.
Mr. L. Gilbertson presided at the meeting of Turanga ratepayers held at Whitford. He stated that at a previous meeting objection had been taken to the amount, five per cent, of the proposed cost, that was required from the riding. He considered that a poll of ratepayers should be taken before the cost was allocated. It was decided to communicate with the Minister of Public Works, stating that the bridge was not essential and urging that before any proceedings are taken a poll of ratepayers in the Manukau County should be held.
