LUCILLE'S TRIUMPH
UPTON CUP WINNER SATURDAY’S YACHTING PONSONBY CLUBS DAY After a keenly contested race, the Point Chevalier Sailing Club’s boat Lucille won the Lipton Cup on Saturday, finishing nearly four minutes ahead of the second boat. Yaruna 11., Devonport Cruising Club. The Akarana Sailing Club’s representative, Valeria, crossed the line three minutes after Vanina 11. Before a strong, steady sou’-wester, the ten contestants, some carrying spinnakers and some leading jibs, made a magnificent picture on the run down the harbour. A good start soon put Lucille in the lead. After passing King’s Wharf she was leading from Venus (Takapuna) and Alarie (Milford), with Huia, Kokiri, Alalun, Varuna, Valeria, Rakoa and Mowai following in that order. On the run back against both wind and tide Lucille rounded Resolution Buoy nearly two minutes ahead of Varuna, with Valeria another 2£ min. astern. The leaders maintained the same relative position and crossed the line in that order.
Huia, the Ponsonby boat, had the misfortunte to split her mainsail during the race and had to be towed in to her moorings. Oft North Head a member of her crew, Air. Geo. Grimmer, was knocked overboard by the boom, but managed to scramble back on board again. Marie beat the gun over the line, and failing to recross, was disqualified. The finishing times were: Lucille, 4h 52min. 12sec 1 Varuna 11., 4h. 55min. 58sec. .. 2 Valeria, 4h. 58min. 55sec 3 The holder of the cup, Rakoa (Richmond), finished fifth, her time being sh. Omin. 3Ssec. In the C and E class race for the Palmer Cup, only two out of six entrants started, and only one of those finished. Wairiki, whose time was 4h. 25min. lsec. The other boat, Alahoe, abandoned the race. Six yachts entered for the Jackson Cup race for H and I class. Of these three started and two finished. Passing Prince’s Wharf on the run down the harbour. Starlight was leading from Spray, with Awatere third. The latter did not finish and the race resulted: Starlight (lmin.), 4h. 24min. 11 sec 1 Spray (GJmin.) 4h. 37min. 27sec. 2 With spinnakers set and running before the wind, the four patikis fairly flew down the harbour in the race for the Alacindoe Cup—Alaroro. Alollie, Mawhiti and Alatarere. strung out astern of each other in that order. The race resulted: Afawhiti, 4h. 6min. 27sec 1 Alollie, 4h. 7min. 7sec 2 Alaroro, 4h. 7min. 24sec. , . . . 3 Scud was the only V class entrant to scratch for the Foster Cup. Drone took command early in the race and crossed the finishing line three-guar-ters of a minute ahead of Surprise. The finishing times were: Drone (lfmin.), 4h. llmin. 53sec. 1 Surprise (scr.), 4h. 12min. 38sec. 2 Wild Wave (6£min.), 4h. 19min. 15sec 3 ATagic, who was with Drone early in the race, did not finish. The S class event for the Elliston Cup resulted: Sea Sleigh (3min.), 4h. 34min. 1 Lancia (4min.). 4h. 41min. 25sec. 2 Namu (scr.), 4h. 38min. 29sec. 3 Namu was Bsec. late in starting and Atangatai did not finish. The mark moored off the western tide deflector sank before the start of the two last races, T and Y and X classes, and some confusion resulted among the boats, who Avere unable to locate it. The boats were recalled and a new mark placed. In consequence
only one round was sailed in each of Twelve yachts started in the Carr Cup event, which resulted; Alert (scr.), 4h. 38min. 57sec. 1 Romp (12min.), 4h. 45min. 35sec. - Alarie (4min.), 4h. 43min. 38sec. « The Jellieoe boats got a sevgre buffeting by the short, choppy *? that were running, the crews drenched to the skin very early mt race.
