"He is one of the biggest bookmakers. if not the biggest, in Palmerston North,” said Senior Detective Quirke, when Prank Dean was charged in the Magistrate’s Court this morning with using premises in Frederick Street as a common gaming-house. The premises were visited by the police on April 7. and over a period of an hour and a-half, £6O was taken in bets. "His books show large transactions.” added the senior detective. The accused pleaded guilty, and was fined £IOO and costs. Joseph Daniel Carty, on a similar charge, was fined £SO and costs. The senior detective stated that accused was in a considerably smaller way of business than Dean.
