SHOOTING AT PENROSE VERRALL WINS CHAMPIONSHIP Over ranges of 800yds. and 900yds. the final shoot of the championship series of the City and Suburbs’ Rifle Club took place at Penrose on Saturday. The weather conditions were not good and it was expected that it would have a serious effect on the scoring. A feature of the match was the fine performance put up by H. J. Verrall in winning the championship. Scores:— A Grade.—H. J. Verrall, 50 at 800yds, 49 at 900 yds., total 99; R. C. Russell, 47, 43—90; A. T. Patrick, 43, 44—87; A. J. Pieterson, 40, 45—85; C. J. M. Clark, 38, 43—81; G. H. Hughes, 42, 39—81; L. Cradock, 45, 35—80; P. J. Pring, 41, 34—75; A. C. Watson, 22, 42—64; J. A. Spry, retired. B Grade.—L. Verrall, 38 at 800yds., 39 at 900yds. (handicap 10), total 87; G. E. Watt, 43, 43 (scr.) —86; H. W. Verrall, 43, 34 (9)—86; N. D. Porritt, 33, 39 (6)— 78; I. J. Spry, 36, 28 (12)—76; F. Long, 28, 3 (IS)—49; G. King, retired. Silver spoons were won by Rifleman H. J. Verrall and Rifleman H. W. Verrall. The final trophies presented by Mr. A. H. Court and Mr. J. J. Kingston resulted: A Grade.—R. C. Russell, 8 points (winner); A. T, Patrick, 7; H. J. Verrall, 6; C. J. M. Clark, 5; A. C. Watson, 2; J. A. Spry, 1; A. J. Pieterson, 1. B Grade.—L. Verrall (winner), 10; G. E Watt, 8; R. H. Matthews, 4; H. W. Verrall, 3; G. G. Kelly, 2; I. J. Spry, 1; N. D. Porritt, 1; E. E. Watson, 1. The shoot-off for the club’s trophy in the first series resulted in a win for G. E. Watt. The service championship will be decided next Saturday. AUCKLAND GUN CLUB.
The fortnightly shoot of the Auckland Gun Club was held on the club grounds on Saturday. Sixteen shooters took part in the competitions and the gathering was in every way a successful one. A five-bird match was won outright bv J. E. Fitt (25yds.), F. H. Seccombe (29 yds.), J. Williamson (28yds.), C. E. Hodge (24yds.) and D. Cairns (21yds.), dividing second money. A miss-out sweep was won outright by L. O. Masters (21yds.) on the eighth round, C. E. Hodge (24yds ) being runner-up with seven birds. The second miss-out sweep resulted in a tie between F. H. Seccombe (29yds.) and A E. Macredie (24yds.) on the third round, the former winning the shoot-off. The Easter shoot will be held next Wednesday and the annual picnic will take place on Good Friday at the club grounds.
