TROTTING
Arrived Safely The Auckland champion three-year-old Great Peter has arrived fit and well lti Christchurch, and is now doing good work in view of his one engagement at the New Zealand Metropolitan Easter meeting—the Champion Stakes. A Fast Work-Out Master Audo was given a fast workout at Addington last Tuesday,, but he did not go at all satisfactorily, breaking more than once. Master Audo has made a lot of improvement this season, but just at present he seems to be on the down grade, and he may require a spell. For Hawera Logan Park did not pace steadily in his work at Addington during the week, although he showed plenty of speed. The ex-Dunedin-owned pacer has improved a good deal since going into Tomkinson’s stable. Logan Park is among those nominated for the Hawera meeting next week. Engagements Declined Native Chief will not be a starter in the Easter and the Flying Handicaps on the opening day of the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting. Beginning to Prosper Trainer M. B. Edwards, at Yaldhurst, has a large team in work, and although he suffered severe loss when his premises at Belfast were burned to the ground it is pleasing to report that he has once more overcome difficulties, and is now housing about a score of horses in his new premises. So far this season this young trainer has prepared 18 winners and ridden and driven 20. Severe? Oh, No! One Southern scribe, in commenting on Taraire’s disqualification, together with his owner and trainer, for two years, expresses the opinion that the sentence is a severe one. Taraire, as previously mentioned, was given a holiday for allegedly “not trying to win a race.” As it is the betting public who keep the sport going, it is quite right that those who do not play the game and let punters down in cold blood—to use an every-day expression —should be made to pay. His Connections Unlucky The Mangere pacer Gaza is reported to have contracted a cold, and also other complaints, and as a result was not to be seen out at Wanganui ana may not be raced at Hawera. Although Gaza ran unplaced at Thames he would have counted sufficient admirers to send him out well supported at Wanganui to-day, and it is very unfortunate for his connections that he is now relegated to the sick list, for in all probability they were looking to the pacer to run well. Going Strong Bridget Galindo, when trained and raced in Auckland by her owner, showed undoubted promise. Indeed, she had only struck real racing form, and her attempt at Alexandra Park suggested that this trotter would eventually account for a good race. Since joining W. Tomkinson’s stable Bridget Galindo has been working well, and Aucklanders should remember that she is likely to be seen in action at the Metropolitan meeting at Easter. May Decline Their Visit A large number of Canterbury owned and trained horses are engaged at Hawera. Among those with horses in the list and likely to assist are F. R. Bust, W. J. Tomkinson, H. Fox, E. C. McDermott, R. Humphreys, J. Bryce, W. T. Lowe, T. H. McKenzie, A. G. Wilson, H. Frost, N. L. Price, S. J. Thomas, R. E. Mills, D. Withers, M. B. Edwards, O. E. Hooper and D. Warren It will be interesting to see how many of these trainers will visit Hawera, as the New Zealand Metropolitan meeting—at which a number of them have horses engaged—comes up for decision about the same time as the Hawera meeting.
