DESIGNS FOR NEW CUSHIONS
Everyone cannot afford to invest in fiesh chair-covers and furnishings, but most people can manage a new cushion or two; and it’s really surprsing what a difference these make to the appearance of a tired-looking armchair. This season’s cushions are gorgeous affairs, resplendent in rich velvets and silks, satins and metal brocades—very expensive to buy ready-made, but quite simple, to fashion at home. Sale remnants can often be utilised in pillowmaking, and all sorts of daring colourcombinations may be evolved. So long as the main colours harmonise with the room’s furnishings, one can let one’s imagination and ingenuity run riot among a glorious medley of glowing shades. While most of this year’s cushions are circular, the very newest shape is that of a small mattress—a pleasant change this. Velvet is the best material to use for the miniature mattresses; the exaple sketched was carried out in a rich plum colour, the edges being hound with gold braid. A band of purple and gold brocade made a decorative trimming, and huge gold tassels finished off each short side effectively. The other cushion shown can also
