MR. COATES AND KICKS

“WISH YOU'D TAKE THEM” LOCAL BODIES’ DEPUTATION (From Our Resident Correspondent .) WELLINGTON, Thursday. The Prime Minister wishes that local bodies were in a position of authority so that they could take some of the kicks now administered to the general Government. This view he expressed to a deputation from the Municipal Association which waited upon him to-day to place before him remits passed by the annual conference at Palmerston North recently. Mr. Coates said there were two sides to the questions advanced. The Government was not interested, apart from the general public interest. He realised, however, that local bodies had done and were doing good work and getting little thanks for it. Personally he was in favour of decentralisation of local bodies if it could be worked equitably. The statement by the deputation that remits numbered 150 drew a surprised ejaculation from Mr. Coates; but the deputation hastened to add that the number for presentation to him had been reduced to thirty.
