MT. ALBERT MAYORALTY
CONTEST ASSURED CAPTAIN ATWELL TO STAND The decision of Captain W. Atwell to again stand against the sitting mayor, Mr. L. E. Rhodes, will assure an election for the mayoralty to the Mount Albert borough. At the last elections Captain Atwell, who was formerly a staff officer to the Imperial Forces, created a great deal of interest in the contest when he polled 1370 votes against 1431 cast for Mr. Rhodes. The latter has occupied the mayoral chair for four years, and when recently approached by a strong deputation, consented to stand for a further term. With other candidates offering themselves in certain of the wards in addition to most of the sitting members an election for the council will also take place. With no indication of any opposition forthcoming in the neighbouring borough of Mount Eden, it would appear as if Mr. E. H. Potter and his council of 12 will be returned unopposed—a marked contrast to affairs at Mount Albert. Two years ago the mayor was re-elected without an election being necessary, and on present indications history seems likely to repeat itself.
