WAIHI BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL (From Our Own Correspondent.) WALHI, To-day. j At a meeting of the Waihi Borough Council last evening it was decided to dispense with the services of the borough engineer. It was decided to forward to the Minister in Charge of Electoral Affairs a recommendation that in future all licensing committee elections be held on the same day as the general election of councillors. Mr. Dale, the mover, said it would be the means of saving thousands of pounds which could be used for unemployment assistance. The picture theatre owners were granted permission to show on Good Friday. An application from a billiardroom proprietor to keep his saloon open on Good Friday was also granted. The mayor, Mr. W. M. Wallnutt, was entertained at the close of the meeting by the deputy-mayor, Dr. T. G. Short (opponent of the mayor at the forthcoming elections) and councillors. The usual eulogistic speeches were made.
