CHURCHILL’S BUDGET
PROPOSALS BEFORE CABINET DEFICIT £20,000,000 By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright RUGBY, Wednesday. A special meeting of Cabinet has been summoned for to-morrow, when it is understood that the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Winston Churchill, who has completed his plans for the Budget, will submit his oposals before they are put before Parliament in the annual Budget statement. There is, as usual, much speculation on the matter. The newspapers are discussing the possibility that the duties on heavy lines and on tobacco may be increased, and also that the period of credit allowed to brewers may be further curtailed. But Budget secrets are always carefully guarded, and no reliance can be placed on these forecasts. The newspapers calculate that the returns from the existing taxation will leave the Chancellor with a prospective deficit of £20,000,000. But, as the labour troubles which caused the heavy fall in last year's revenue are unlikely to be repeated, it is expected that Mr. Churchill will base his calculations on his conviction that trade will improve.—A. and N.Z
