COLONEL SHOT DEAD
GIBRALTAR TRAGEDY CRAZED SOLDIER’S ACT Cable. — Press Association.—Copyright Rec. 1.5 p.m. LONDON, Thursday. Colonel J. Fitzgerald, commandi-.g the second battalion of the East Surrey Regiment at Gibraltar, paid his usual afternoon visit to the orderlyroom, accompanied by the adjutant. The latter, departing, noticed Lieutenant Duffield, and asked him why he was there. He replied that he wished to see the colonel. The adjutant obtained permission, an( * Duffield entered. Presently shots w ere heard, and the colonel was shot hi the head. The adjutant came in, and the coloDe l said: ‘‘He shot me; arrest him!” an( * soon after died. Duffield admited his guilt, and after arrest was placed in the mental ward. tt is believed that he is suffering from delusions. The officers say there was no illreeling against the colonel, who recently complimented Duffield on his good work. The British colony has cancelled all entertainments as a result of the tragedy.—a. and N.Z.
