dr. SCHOLEFIELD’S MISSION AUCKLAND GROUP FORMED FORTHCOMING conference Or. Guy H. Scholefield, D. Sc., 0.8. - Parliamentary Librarian, a nd distinguished New Zealand historian, is in Auckland to-day advocating the formation of a northern branch of the Institute of Pacific Relations. Wellington has a branch under the presidency of Sir James Allen. Dr. Scholefield is of opinion that Auckland should form a similar group. Strong New Zealand representation a t the forthcoming Pacific Conference at Honolulu is also urged by Dr. Scholefield, who also hopes personally to attend this important gathering. effect of inter-marriage Mr. W. K. Tuck presided at a meeting of the University College in Auckland last night, when Dr. Scholerield outlined the work of the Wellington group. He said that papers of such importance as, for instance, the effect of inter-marriage between Maoris and Europeans in New Zealand. were already being prepared. Enormous were the possibilities, he declared, now open in view of Professor Condliffe’s recent annointmeit as research director at Honolulu., The necessity of an Auckland group to stimulate interest in the Institute V as emphasised by Mr. W. H. Cocker. A committee to carry out preliminary investigations for Auckland included: Professor Burbidge, Dr. Tlild., Xorthcroft, Mr. T. Blood worth. Mr. L. A. Mander, Mr. J. Shearer, Mr. Tuck, and Mr. Cocker. On Professor Condliffe’s appointment In the Pacific, Dr. Scholefield was appointed Wellington secretary. He succeeded Mr. Charles Wilson last year as Parliamentary Librarian. For some years Dr. Scholefield represented the New Zealand Press delegation in London. To thousands of Maorilanders he was known as the editor of ' The New Zealander.” Dr. Scholefield was one of the few Press representatives fortunate enough to witness the surrender of the German Grand Fleet at Scapa Flow.
