FOR THE HOME

THE LIVING ROOM There are many rooms which lack that useful, sensible and artistic feature, a good open fireplace, in modern homes. This is a pity, because the open fireplace is not only a pleasant, homely, inviting place in the winter, but a healthy means of ventilation in a hot room in the summer months. In the room without a fireplace, special attention should be given to decoration and arrangement. Each room should have its centre of attraction, and where there is a cosy hearth in the living-room, it seems to form, naturally, the interest centre. Where it is missing it is sometimes possible to make a group of windows the centre of interest, especially if there be a lovely view beyond. A bay window or an alcove can form a pleasing centre-point, if comfortable chairs or couches be properly grouped about it. A big couch frequently forms the attraction —the part of the room to which people are immediately drawn. It should be enhanced by a little sidetable, a smoker’s stand, and, perhaps, a pedestal lamp—something to complete the grouping.

Whether buying or building, study the outlook from every angle and beware of any vacant allotments nearby which could be built upon in such a way as to spoil your view.
