BALLACHULISH WINS

WAIPAPAKAURI CUP A SMART THREE-YEAR-OLD EVENTS AT WHANGAREI The Waipapakauri Club held its annual race meeting at Whangarei yesterday under most favourable conditions. The fixture was conducted in conjunction with the Whangarei Club, which races to-morrow, and consequently there was a large attendance. The course was in good order, and the sport of the best. Ballachulish won the Waipapakauri Cup like a good one, and a repetition of yesterday’s form will make the three-year-old difficult to dispose of in some of his future engagements. Speculation was of a fairly brisk nature, the totalisator handling f 10,338 10s. compared with £16,331 ku'.t year, when the meeting was. also held at Whangarei, a decrease ©f £992 10s. Notes on the racing and details of results follow'. TWO DIVISION RACE Twenty-one paraded for the opening • vent, the Maiden, and as a result the race was run in two divisions, Dimmer being installed a very short-priced favourite. There was plenty of money also for Arinagour. and the MervetteIlina Maunga bracket, with Town Bird fct a good price. In the first division Lady Waipu was badly leit, Dimmer going out very umartly from Star Love, Segment. Exalted, Hina Maunga, Scot Free, and King of the Air. The favourite was • till in front crossing the top and showed the way into the straight to Segment, Exalted, Rina Maunga and Scot Free. In the run home Dimmer easily held his own to score by a length end a-half from Segment, Reed pushing the latter home by a nose from Exalted for second money. Rina Maunga was fourth, and Scot Free and Arlnagour next. Royal Seagull w'hipped round when the barrier went up for the second division and was hopeleo3ly left. Prince Otto, from the same stable as the winner of the first division, began best, but Town Bird soon ran past the colt, the pair being followed along the back by Mervette. Creation and Blue Bonnet. Town Bird showed the way across the top and into the home stretcV. where his nearest attendants were Mervette, Prince Otto and Master Arch. Town Bird then went on to score by a length and a-half from Mervette, who was three parts of a length In front of Creation, with Prince Otto st the head of the remainder and Master Arch following. WAR OFFICER STRIKES FORM

To Kawana was a £l2 better fancy than Antrim Boy in the Awanui Hack. In which all but Dimmer saw the post. Of the remainder Respirator was the Dnly one whose prospec ts were seriously considered. At the start Te Tarae was left. War Officer, on the rails, was the first to get into his stride, leading out from Te Kawana and Antrim Boy, but at the end of a furlong Royal Flight had taken charge, leading along the back from War Officer, Antrim Roy, Respirator, Te Kawana, and Baby Bun.' There was little alteration over the next couple of furlongs, but crossing the top Royal Flight dropped back. War Officer just leading Antrim Boy into the straight, with Royal Flight three lengths back, in front of Respirator, ancl Te Kawana and a bunch. At the distance War Officer and Antrim Boy were having a good set-to until the former commenced to hang out badly, and Antrim Boy's rider made a dart behind War Officer for the rails, ‘caving War Officer to go on and score by a couple of lengths from Antrim Joy. Respirator was a similar distance lway third, nnd then came Te Kawana, Bay Bun, Miss Lucullus, Illingar, Thurnrosae and Royal Flight. FINE CUP CONTEST

Aurumavis was the only defection from the Waipapakauri Cup. leaving a. field of nine. Mint Leaf, who had he services of R. Reed, was always favourite, and the Taranaki horse Aound up carrying £4O more than Curraghmore, and there was a drop of Cl 00 to the third fancy. Princess Ronnie. An excellent start saw Curraghn\ore, Ballachulish. Day Guard and Papatu the first to show out, Day riuard running into the lead crossing the top. Up the straight the first time Day Guard was making play from Curraghmore, Ballachulish, Papatu, Princess Ronnie, Spoony. Kamehamehu. Mint Leaf and Thursby. At the five 'nrlongs Curraghmore and Ballachul«h were running together a clear « ngth behind Day Guard, with Papatu. rpoony. Mint Leaf. Princess Ronnie, »nd Thursby following. Three fur, vngs from home Balachulish went to •he front, and the three-year-old piloted the field into the straight, bemg followed by Spoony, Curraghmore. > apatu, Thursby, Mint Leaf, Day Guard ind Princess Ronnie. Over the last !>it Ballachulish held bis own to win dv a length and a-haif from Papatu. a ho finished too strongly for Spoony, ,vho was half a length away in third -fiace. Curraghmore was fourth, and Hint Leaf. Thursby, Kamehameha, and Princess Ronnie were next to cross the ine, with Day Guard last. LOCAL HORSE SUCCEEDS Backers wanted nothing but Gold Peak in the K&taia Hurdles, the Tarala.ki representative being entrusted A'lth £169 more than Kara mu, with the remainder at good odds. The favourite jndeavoured to give the field a start

and beat but she failed badly. Dead Sweet and Comet King went out to make the pace a cracker, the pair being in the van up the straight the first time, five lengths ahead of Karamu, Gold Peak and Slump, this trio being in line, Llewellyn being next. Along the back the favourite ran into third place, being followed by Slump and Karamh, with Llewellyn improving his position. Dead Sweet and Comet King were practically on terms turning for home, being several lengths in front of Gold Peak and Llewellyn. At the half distance Dead Sweet had a slight lead, only to see Comet King come again and get up to win by half a length. Llewellyn was four lengths away in third place, and Gold Peak was close up. Slump and Karamu were next to finish. SURPRISE IN THE SPRINT Thirteen contested the open sprint, the Waiharar Handicap, Awarere being £B9 better backed than Delightment, and there was a big drop .to Serang. Bretland played up at the start and was eventually placed behind the field, to get left when the barrier was released. Serang, on the rails, jumped out in front of Delightment, Ring the Bell, Automne and Awarere. At the half mile Serang still held command from Delightment, with Awarere next and Ring the Bell and White Bird following. Into the home stretch Awarere had a slight advantage over Delightment and Serang, the trio being ahead of Ring the Bell, White Bird, Automne and Charlady. Inside the distance the field was bunched, and then Charlady and Automne drew out, pursued by Ring the Bell, and in a slashing finish Charlady hung on to win by a head from Automne, with Ring the Bell only a neck away third. Then in a bunch came Delightment, Serang, Archees, Awarere, and White Bird. ONE FOR ABBEY DAY Whaka King was all the rage in the Ahipara Hack, but the holders of the 505 tickets on his chances were very lucky in being afforded the chance of collecting at all. The favourite had every chance, getting away well from the inside position, being followed out of tl\e straight by Plane Pearl. Golden Autumn, Queen Rewa* Charitaine and Star Comet. Along the back Abbey Day ran to the front, from Golden Autumn, Whaka King. Plane Pearl, Charitainne, and Nassock, and continued to hold her advantage to the home turn, where her closest attendants were Golden Autumn, Whaka King, Plane Pearl, Nassock and Charitaine. In the run to the judge Abbey Day held her own to score by a length from Whaka King, with Golden Autumn right up third. Nassock came from well back to get fourth place, Star Comet, Queen Rewa, Charitaine and Plane Pearl being next in order. JUST QUIETLY WINS DISTRICT RACE There was a big surprise in the Mangonui Hack, the race confined to district horses. Bright Dawn was a firm favourite, £9l better backed than Adjuster. Several got left when the barrier went up. Waning Light made play over the early stages from Thurnrosae and Quaestor, but they had not gone very far before Adjuster had taken charge from Thurnrosae, Bright Dawn, Fiery Lad and Lady Arch. Adjuster acted as pacemaker across the top and into the straight, the nearest to him at this stage being Thurnrosae, Bright Dawn a.nd Just Quietly. The last-named finished best to secure the verdict by a neck over Bright Dawn, with Adjuster half a length further back. Thurnrosae was foruth, and then came Fiery Lad and Waning Light. GOLD FERN AT LAST The first day’s sport concluded with the Houhora Handicap, which drew a field of five. Aurumavis was a better favourite than Master O’Rorke, but there was a mild suprise. Gold Fern jumped away best, leading out of the straight from Oration, Rangitahi, Master O’Rorke and Aurumavis. There was little change along the back, and as they came into the straight Rangitahi had the slightest advantage over Gold Fern with Aurumavis and Master O’Rorke next. At the half distance Gold Fern was up with Rangitahi, and in a punishing finish the former passed the post a neck in front of the Waikato horse. Aurumavis was a length and a-half away third. Master O’Rorke and Oration following. Additional results: WAIPAPAKAURI CUP Of £3OO, 11 furlongs. 7—BALLACHULISH (H. M. Campbell’s) b g, 3yrs. t by Kilboy— Matatane, 7.0, W. H.
