CITY OUTLETS

REPORT TO COUNCIL PLANS AND ESTIMATES A report on the deliberations of the full council in committee was presented to the City Council last evening, dealing with traffic outlets from the city via Day Street, Belgium Street, and Archhill Guly Road. The Mayor reported that at a meeting of the committee of the whole council on March 24 various schemes were dealt with, and it was resolved that the scheme plan of a new traffic outlet, submitted by the City Engineer and the scheme for the proposed new roading through Day Street be recommended for adoption. The Mayor reported that those important and extensive links had for some time been the subject of careful consideration, and in view of the many interests involved on both projects he stressed the necessity of coming to an early decision on the matter. The scheme for a bridge across Archhill Gully was not a new one, having been under serious consideration in the past by various com - mittees of the Council. After further consideration the committee resolved to affirm the desirability of a connection between Great North Road and New North Road via Bond Street or Commercial Road, and recommended that the City Engineer be instructed to prepare alternative plans and estimates for such a. scheme. Cr. Allum moved the adoption of the report, and said this did not mean that the work would commence immediately. The schemes could be submitted to the incoming - council with the strongest recommendation. The Archhill Gully bridge was perhaps some way in the future, but details should be prepared. Cr. Blood worth said he approved of the suggestion, and it certainly did not mean an immediate start. He remembered practically the same motion being passed some three years ago, and certainly nothing hurried had been done in the past two years. Members stressed the desirability of all possible preparation being made for the matter to go before the new council, and the report was adopted.
