THE REGENT
“FINE MANNERS” AND HECTOR ST. CLAIR The picture and vaudeville programme at the Regent Theatre tomorrow will be headed by the Paramount attraction, “Fine Manners,” and Hector St. Clair respectively. In “Fine Manners” Gloria Swanson ventures into new realms and is seen both as a comedienne and a tragedienne. In the opening scenes she appears as a little burlesque chorus girl. Pretty, vivacious, happy and full of the joy oi living, she atracts the attention of a wealthy young society man. He falls in love with her because of the girl’s naturalness, so conspicuously absent in the debutantes he knows. What happens when she is induced to take a course in “fine manners” provides tire audience with a series of thrilling climaxes, and more than a few laughs. Gloria is better than ever, and aiding the star in her efforts are such fine players as Eugene O’Brien, Helen Dunbar and Walter Goss. Incidentally we should tell the ladies that in this feature Gloria wears some amazing creations in the way of gowns, cloaks, frocks, etc., which will make the modest housewife sigh with envy, and the lady of leisure say “Another cheque, John!” As for Hector St. Clair, he is far too well-known to need any introduction to Aucklanders. Suffice is it to say that for his special season at the Regent he has selected a new programme of the drollest absurdities. Included in Eddie Horton’s numbers at the mighty Wurlitzer will be a novel feature, "The Dream,” in which a human voice is heard singing in the organ to the organist’s accompaniment. Mr. Horton will also play “Gipsy Dove Song” and a popular medley. The orchestra, under the baton of Maurice Guttridge will play a new selection of numbers.
