NEW FIRE BOARD

MEETS AT TE AWAMUTU (From Our Own Correspondent.) TE AWAMUTU, To-day. The first annual meeting of the recently-constituted Te Awamutu Fire Board was held on Thursday evening. There were present: Mr. C. G. Downes, chairman, Messrs W. G. Bell and G. Neville, underwriters’ representatives, D. McArthur, Government representative, and F. H. Vile. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. D. Bockett for the work he had so ably done during the initial stages of the board’s formation. Mr. T. Narbey was appointed superintendent and Mr. J. Chadwick deputysuperintendent. Applications for the secretaryship were considered, Mr. G. O. Jourdain being appointed. The matter of payment to members of the brigade was discussed. Pending the result of inquiries from other boards as to the system of payment in vogue, the men are to be paid 2s 6d per hour for attendance at* fires. The town clerk submitted a schedule of the present property, which it was proposed to hand over by the borough council to the board. The schedule was considered and it was decided to appoint a valuer and to ask the borough council to also appoint a valuer ,thej property to be taken over at the valuation agreed upon. The estimated expenditure for the ensuing year was set down at £420, this figure including approximate capital repayable to the borough council, purchase of new equipment and maintenance. Of this the Government wiil contribute 10 per cent., or £42, and the balance will be equally divided between the underwriters and the borough council, £l9B per annum each.
