TAUPO WATER
POSITION AT HAMILTON COUNCIL CONSIDERING ATTITUDE (From Our Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, To-day. The Auckland Water Supply Commission is seeking- the opinions of local bodies whose districts are in a direct line with Auckland and Taupo on proposals to carry water from Lake Taupo or other Waikato sources. The attitude which the council will eventually adopt in connection with the matter was defined by the Mayor of Hamilton, Mr. J. R. Fow, at a meeting of the council last night. This he said would largely depend upon the financial aspects. The cost of delivering water to the present reservoir was but a nominal sum, made up merely of pumping charges. The cost of the pipe line, chlorinating and dechlorinating was, say Id. or 2d. a thousand gallons. The* town suffered through lack of pressure, and to overcome this it was proposed to spend money to ensure a greater volume of supply and to instal a “booster” pump to provide higher pressure. If the Taupo scheme were available the borough would still have to erect a new reservoir and provide for existing pipe lines to withstand the higher pressure. The Provisional Water Board had suggested that the charge to be made by the board would be at the rate of, approximately, Is. a thousand gallons at the boundary, which meant that the borough would have to double its charges to consumers if the latter wanted Taupo water and higher pr -•sure for fire-fighting purposes. v..;s ....t- a out that in addition .. ns benefiting from the supply of . a.ter from Taupo, the service would be a great utility to farmers along the route. A special committee was set up to go into the matter with power to act.
