BAY OF PLENTY RAILWAY

COMPLETING THE SYSTEM ENGINEER TO TAKE OVER LINE Next week the Railway Department will take over 13 miles of railway line between Waihi and Takawai which have been completed by the Public Works Department. This is the most recently-constructed piece of the line which eventually will run from Waihi to Tauranga and which, when it is completed, will be a direct route between Auckland and Taneatua, in the Bay of Plenty. Air. J. K. Lowe, district railway engineer for the Auckland district, will leave next Tuesday to take over the new piece of line. This section, he .ssiid to-day. will take the line to where work is in progress by Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and Co.. Ltd., who are working on another section of 18 miles of line which should be completed toward the end of the year. When the section on which Armstrong, Whitworth are working is completed and taken over by the Railway Department there will be a direct rail service between Auckland and Tauranga. On the other side of Tauranga, stretching through the Bay of Plenty district, between 60 and 70 miles of line, terminating at Taneatua, have been finished. This will make the system complete so far as the Railway Department’s present plan is concerned, and will add another 100 miles of line to that in the Auckland district.
