TERRIFIC EXPLOSION
OVER THREE HUNDRED ENTOMBED
DISASTER IN PENNSYLVANIA
A terrific explosion yesterday in a mine belonging- to the Pennsylvania Coal and Coke Company entombed 350 men. Dead bodies have already been recovered. The mine officials are unable to tell the extent of the e:-.-lesion which was heard for miles around.
By. Cable. — Pi'ess Associate Copyright Received 10.10 a.m. EHRENFIELD (Penn.), Wednesday. A terrific explosion in a mine belonging to the Pennsylvania Coal and Coke Company entombed 350 men. The mine officials are doubtfirl about the chances of any of them escaping, except tne Tew who already came out through the air-shaft in a section separated from that in which the majority were working. These were ignorant of the fate of their comrades. It is feared that 250 were in the immediate area of the explosion which wrecked the mine offices and was heard for miles around. Gas and mine dust are believed to have caused the upheaval.
Officials are unable to tell the extent of the explosion, but houses 100 yards away were knocked off their supporting props. Rescue crews, ambulances, doctors and nurses have been rushed to the scene.—Sun. Later. The bodies of eight of the victims were recovered on Wednesday evening. It is believed that all the entombed will be brought to the surface.—Sun. Pennsylvania is the richest of the United States in mineral and industrial production. The 1923 census reported the anthracite coal output at 95,440.000 tons; bituminous, 113,145,30 S tons; worth about 843,314,000 dollars.
