WAIHI MEWS
SUBSTANTIAL COLLECTIONS (From Our Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, To-day. In his report to the Waihi Schools Committee, Mr. W. C. Morris, the headmaster of the District High School, stated that for a period of 17 weeks £SB 31s had been deposited in the Schools Savings Bank. This shows in average of £5 16s per week, a highly gratifying result. The recent carnival week, organised by the local Plunket Society to raise funds to provide a Plunket room, returned £BS. With donations from the borough, etc., it is anticipated that sufficient will be raised to enable the rooms to be built. The statement that appeared in an Auckland paper recently that the Ohinemuri Mines and Battery Employees’ Union were nominating a full ticket for the borough council elections. appears to be without foundation. for THE SUN representative was informed by the local secretary, Mr. W. Bice, that no such step had bec-n taken. Unemployment in Waihi was prevalent a few weeks ago, but at the present time very few married men appear to be out of work. Work was found for about twenty-two men on the Waihi Beach Road, and when this is completed it is hoped that employment will be found for them on the Waihi-Whangamata Road. Several young men and youths are on the unemployed list, otherwise the position in Waihi is not acute.
