EARTHQUAKE DANGER

7 PUBLIC INDIFFERENT AMERICAN WARNING By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright SYDNEY, Tuesday. Professor Bailey Willis, of Deland Stanford University, has arrived by the Ulimaroa from New Zealand. He sounded a note of warning to New Zealand, where, he said, scientists and officials were alert to the danger of earthquakes and were inclined to take measures against future disaster. But the public was indifferent, and architects and engineers generally were careless. He said this attitude was to be deplored, in view of the certainty of future shocks similar to that of 1855. A. and N.Z.

A GAIN OUT OF CHAOS “The inestimable gain is that we have forced the Cantonese Government to declare its hand and assume the responsibilities to which it claims the right, but the exercise of which it showed every disposition to evade. The Cantonese Foreign Minister, Mr. Eugene Chen, has been taken at his word. He claims to represent an effective Government and to be able to maintain order. Had we forcibly resisted his pretensions we should in all probability have found ourselves ranged against not only a frenzied mob but the armed forces of the Cantonese. By taking them at their face value we have put Mr. Chen in the position of having to keep his promises or abandon the Cantonese claim to be able to govern.”—"Manchester Guardian.”
