OVER TWO HUNDRED MILES AN HOUR SPEED!!
ALL RECORDS SMASHED
SEAGRAVE’S TRIUMPH
FASTEST TIME IN MOTOR-CAR
Major H. O. D. Segrave has smashed all motor-car speed records by travelling at a speed of 203.841 miles an hour on the Dayton Sands, Florida.
By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 6.40 a.m. FLORIDA, Tuesday. At Dayton Beach, Major H. O. D. Segraye, the English racing driver, established a world’s record in driving at a speed of 203.841 miles an hour, in a four-ton speedster. Major Segrave drove an automobile faster than any man has ever driven one before. He set three unofficial records which will probably be accepted as official when the timing is finally checked.
Segrave takes a tremendous risk in reaching the incredible speed of 200 miles an hour. Incidentally to reach this speed, even with the stream-lined body used on the Sunbeam, 2.30 h.p. is absorbed in overcoming wind resistance alone. To protect the driver as much as possible a 3-Binch armour-plate has been attached to the bottom of the car, so that, if a wheel breaks, or if any similar accident occurs, the driver has a> chance, and the car will be strong enough to skid along the sand.
