WAIKATO BOWLING
GROUP PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP DECIDED (From Our Oxon Correspondent.) HAMILTON, To-day. The final of the rinks championship in the Waikato group of the South Auckland Centre was decided at the Frankton Clubs’ green yesterday afternoon, when "Whitiora, 23, beat Cambridge, 17. The game was commenced on Saturday and with Whitiora leading 20—10 on the 15th head, play was adjourned until yesterday owing to the failing light. Cambridge opened well, making a good recovery to score 7 points before Whitiora took a head. Whitiora then played up to their true form and suceeded in scoring wins on the last two heads. . _ The rinks were. —Cambridge: Cooper, Lundon, Wallace, S. James (s.), and Whitiora: D. Carswell, H. Fenwick, J. Qualtrough, R. Higgott <s.). On the opening head, the 16th, Coopei, the Cambridge lead drew two in. Qualtrough (Whitiora) drew with the second shot. Higgott just missed drawing the shot with his last bowl, and Cambridge took two points on the head. Cooper played a good opening bowl in the next head. With his next bowl, he trailed the kitty from the Cambridge lead's two and lay one. When the skips sent their bowls down Cambridge were one up. Higgott trailed the kitty with his first bowl and changed the head to three- up in Whitiora’s favour. James, with his second shot, burnt the head. On the replay Whitiora lay one up after the leads had delivered their bowls. There was no change when the seconds played. Wallace drew the shot. Higgott drew a toucher, but still lay one down, Cambt ldge taking the head with one, making the score Whitiora 20, Cambridge 13. The Cambridge lead, Cooper, again opened well at the 18th head with two counters, Lundon adding another, but Fenwick took one out. He was too fast with his second, the green being rather keen. Qualtrough made a good shot to fail by inches only. When the skips went down Cambridge were still two up, and there was no alteration at the finish of the head, making the score 15—20. At the 19th Cooper trailed the kitty with his first. Carswell with his second altered one of Cambridge’s shots to a counter. With his first bowl Wallace added one to the total, but Qualtrough took it out. James with his first, kissed the kitty, where his bowl remained. Higgott just missed in an attempt to run kitty off, allowing Cambridge to add two to their tally, making their score 17 to Whitiora’s 20, the latter having not so far scored since the resumption of the game after Saturday. Cambridge lead, with his second, picked up kitty and rested jack high on the 20th head. Qualtrough drove a straight shot and killed the head. After the leads had sent their bowls down in the replay, Cambridge held one point. | When the skips went down, however, the head was fairly well spread, with Whitiora three up. James failed in an attempt to trail the jack, Higgott added another with the toucher. James attempted to burn the head, but only succeeded in saving one, the head ending with Whitiora two up. On the final head Fenwick with his second shot, came down rather strongly, but got a lucky wick. Wallace tried to break up the head, but failed, leaving Whitiora one up. James sent down a fnst bowl and picked up Fenwick’s shot, sending kitty out to the line. James missed in an attempt to run the bowl off, Whitiora won 23—17.
