GREAT SOUTH ROAD

MANUREWA DEVIATION ROAD CONSTRUCTION PROPOSAL A conference between Mr. A. C. A. Sexton, chairman of the Manurewa Town Board, Mr. M. H. Wynard, motorists’ representative on the Highways Board and Mr. L. B. Campbell, chairman No. 2 Highways’ Council, was held yesterday afternoon when matters connected with the Great South Road at Manurewa were discussed. Although the result of the conference was not made public it is understood that certain proposals of main road will be forwarded to the authorities in due course. Speaking to a SUN reporter this morning in regard to the deviation at the railway bridge near Manurewa, which a few weeks ago caused such inconvenience to motorists, Mr. Sexton stated that the deviation was now in good repair and should cause no further trouble. For the purpose of maintaining detours on their section of the main road, said Mr. Sexton, the Manurewa Town Board had been advised that it could spend up to £ 140 out of the £ 500 made available to local bodies between Otahuhu and Papakura. To repair the deviation in question and put it back into good order, however, was going to run his board into an estimated expenditure of £ 450. The difficulty confronting local bodies was that they not only had to provide detours passable for traffic, but after they had be£n torn up by through traffic they had to be restored to their original condition for the use of the ratepayers. “We could avoid a considerable amount of expense by stopping the lorries,” concluded Mr. Sexton, “but we don’t want to do that. To many people engaged in carrying that would prove too great a hardship.”
