MINING NOTES

MANAGERS REPORT PROGRESS MAORILAND CONSOLIDATED.—The mine manager reports that for week ending March 26 the intermediate level has been cleared of slurry and water, and the defective timber stayed and secured to keep the level open. Although this level has not been put in working order it will not be an expensive job to do so when the time is opportune. The distance of this level from the north face to the south face is 132 ft. The ladder-way from the intermediate to No. 4 level has been put in order with new ladders for the whole distance of 62ft. This makes the ladder-way and pass complete from No. 3 level to No. 4 level, 132 ft. The ventilation has not improved sufficiently in the No. 4 level face to permit work to be carried on there. It will be necessary to instal air pipes and this I intend doing next week. I think there is sufficient pipes at the mine to do the job. MOANATAIARI.—The reef on the seaward drive is wider than the drive, but in the last few holes fired we have not seen so much gold as previously. The quartz is becoming more heavily mineralised. From this drive 201 b. of good picked stone were secured last week. The hillward drive reef is wider than the drive, and .mineral ore is showing in the left-hand side. Colours of gold have been seen in the reef formation. GREAT BRITISH MERCURY MINE.— The furnace is still in operation. A new method of treating the mercurial soot, designed by Mr. T. H. Black, B.Sc.. has been installed. This is a concentration method and replaces the out-of-date boring on an inclined plane. A larger percentage of extraction of mercurv is obtained before returning the residue to the furnace. Experimental trials with this method have been very successful.
