IN THE MARKET PLACE
OVER SUPPLY OF PRODUCE j VALUES AT BEDROCK Practically all lines of produce are selling- at bedrock values in the Auckland City Markets. Orchard and garden produce was offered in large supplies at this morning’s auctions and sold at prices on a par with late rates. FRUIT Island fruit was not so much in evidence and prices showed a tendency to harden. Apples, pears and tomatoes came forward in large quantities, consignments being handled on behalf of Southern growers. There was a preponderance of inferior grade lots and consequently a wide range in prices resulted. Some choice lines of grapes were sold at values if anything silghtly easier than last week. Pears made from 3s. per case for inferior cooking lots to 10s 3d a case for really choice lines. Tomatoes made from 2s to 5s 9d a case according to quality. Cape gooseberries and figs were offering in fair supplies, the former realising 6d. a lb. VEGETABLES Vegetables sold this morning at prices which in many cases would barely clear expenses. An over-supply of many lines allowed buyers to practically make their own market. Onions were only worth 4s 6d to 5s a cwt., while swede turnips sold from Is 5d a sugar-bag. Potatoes sold from 4s 5d to 7s 6d a cwt, and pumpkins and squash from 6s to 7s a cwt. Pickling onions were worth lid a lb; marrows, small, Is 3d a dozen; celery, good, 2s 5d a bundle; cabbages, good, 2s 6d a sack. POULTRY Only a very small offering of poultry came forward, and the quality was not of the best. Prices were in accord with late quotations.
