POWER-BOAT REGATTA
KEEN RACING ON SATURDAY CHAMPIONSHIP TO FLEETWING Ideai weather conditions prevailed on Saturday, when the speed and power boat regatta, organised by the New Zealand Power-boat Association, was held on the Waitemata Harbour. A course below the King’s Wharf had been so planned that the competing speed boats were in full view of the large gathering of spectators on the wharf throughout the races. The programme was the best yet put on by the association, and the arrangements were well carried out. One feature that appealed to " the spectators was that the handicaps were given at the start. This produced a number of exciting finishes. The officials in charge of the racing were Cruising and speed boat races—Starter, E. L. Buchanan; judge, A. M. Wilson; timekeepers. W. D. Ross and R. Ross; recorder, A. J. Collings; inspector of cruisers, M. W. Lane. Outboard races—Starter. S. B. Booth; judge. Dr. Stevenson; timekeepers, C. H. Palmer, S. H. Leyland, and R. C. Renner. Results: General handicap for fast cruisers ana speed-boats; distance six miles.—Tasman (13min 15sec) 1, Manyana (6min SOsec) 4 Miss X (45sec) 3. The other boats to finish were Lady Margaret, Bonzo, fcleetwing Junior, Miss Devonport, Miss Cheltenham and Romance 11. Tasman's time for the race was 22min 50sec, finishing one minute si:sP seconds ahead of Manyana, which was only 37sec in front of Miss X. The best lap was that of Bonzo, which covered the two miles in amm Fast cruisers handicap; distance two miles.—Tasman (2min) 1, Romance U(4min) 2. There were only four starters. Tasman won by the narrow margin of ssec. Manyana was only half-a-minute behind Romance and Lady Margaret IWo minutes. THE HIGH SPEED EVENT General speed-boat handicap and Auckland provincial speed cnampionship (open); distance eight miles.—Spot 20see) 1, Miss Cheltenham (lmm 20sec; 2. Spot got the finishing gun 2min oUsec ahead of Miss Cheltenham, Fleetwing Junior (15sec) being 61sec behind the latter boat. Other competitors to tmisu were Miss Devonport (3min SOsec). Bonzo (35sec) and Hobo (smin 40sec). This race aroused great interest owing to the cios contest between Fleetwing Junior ana Miss X (scr.) until the latter fired her clutch and had to retire. . The championship was taken by rieei wing Junior. She ran the fastest * a ,P the day, doing the two miles in 3min <se . which is equal to 35.7 knots or 44.6 mile-.
