PLUCKY RESCUE
INCIDENT AT SWIMMING GALA Something in the nature of a diversion was caused during the swimming of a girl’s race at the Ponsonby Schools’ carnival in the Shelly Beach Baths yesterday afternoon, when Miss M. Bell, a member of the well-known swimming family of Auckland, effected the rescue of a young girl from the middle of the bath. The young com-
petitor found 50yds rather far to go, and midway between the start and the finish, in deep water, she struck out for the side of the bath with frenzied strokes. She was in grave distress Miss Bell, dived in and brought the frightened child to safety. It was a plucky action that earned the plaudits of those assembled in the vicinity. Miss Bell later won the 50yds, 100yds and 220yds girls’ championships.
