WILL FIGHT PURDY
BUT NOT AS CHAMPION “REG.” TROWERN’S POSITION Reg Trowern’s position with regard to the lightweight championship fight with Charlie Purdy was outlined to a SUN representative to-day by Mr. T. G. Trowern. father of the former. ’There is a wrong impression that Reg. won't fight Purdy for the championship,” said Mr. Trowern. “Reg. is quite willing to meet Purdy in a championship fight, but he won’t fight him as champion on principle, as he does not consider him the champion. “First of all. we consider that when Murray forfeited the title it should have gone back to the previous holder. O’Neill, who was willing to fight for it. Secondlv. Trowern beat Purdy three times, yet the title was awarded to Purdy when Murray forfeited it. “Reg. is prepared to fight Purdy for a £ 200 purse in Auckland on the same lines as they were matched for at Palmerston North. After that, he is prepared to consider a fight for the championship, but not till then, as we con- ; sider Purdy is not entitled to the championship.”
