“EARLY BIRD.”
At Extreme Odds Although the favourite, Sprig, won the English Grand National yesterday, the second horse, Bovril 111., was quoted at two hundred to one only a few weeks before the race, so that his forward showing would undoubtedly come as a genuine surprise. Withdrawn From Classics The secretary of the Auckland Racing Club advises the withdrawal of Lilyvale from both the G.N. Oaks and G.N. St. Leger, and Young Lochinvar from the G.N. St. Leger. Doree has also been withdrawn from the Onslow Handicap. Not Represented The Fordell trainer, Fred Tilley, will not be represented at the Auckland Easter meeting. This is rather surprising, in view of the recent return to form of Mandane, who ran quite a good race in the Thompson Handicap at Wellington recently and was returned a winner over a mile two days later. The stable also withdrew the Quantock colt Laughing Prince, recently purchased by Mr. T. A. Duncan, who raced Enthusiasm with some success, from the rich two-year-old classic, the G.N. Champagne Stakes. Apparently Tilley has advised his patron to adopt a waiting policy with Laughing Prince with a view to serving him up nice and fresh for the spring classics and then being ready to take on the Derbies. Well-known Colours Although Lysander will be missing at Kllerslie next month, the Wanganui owner, Mr. G. M. Currie,
will be strongly represented at the local Easter fixture, for he has four horses engaged. They are The Thorn, who figures in the Easter Handicap, and the two-year-olds Covent Garden, Damaris and Thaw. Covent Garden and Damaris are in the Champagne Stakes. Mask and Deluge are not to come north on this occasion. Will be Missed It is a matter for regret that the Riccarton trainer R. J. Mason will not have any of his charges racing at Ellerslie next month. Agrion and Eulalie have been taken out of the two-year-old classic, and this alone has robbed the Champagne Stakes already of a lot of its interest, for sportsmen were looking forward eagerly to another meeting between Agrion, Gascony and Cimabue. Nevertheless the latter pair will be on hand, and with fifteen others as likely runners the race will still provide a stirring contest, worthy of its predecessors. Hold a Strong Hand There are two trainers at least who hold strong hands in the forthcoming Easter Handicap at Ellerslie. They are J. H. Jefferd and Oney Cox. The former has four engaged—Rapine, Star Stranger, Joy King and Decoy Bird, while Cox has a trio, in Reremoana, Lady Bentinck and Lady Cavendish. The New Plymouth trainer, E. George, is also well represented in the big mile event, for he has entered Hipo, Oration, Te Monanui and Merry Jest. Commendation’s Opponents The first three horses passed the post in the St. Leger at Trentham
recently were Commendation, Hynanna and Magna Charta. In fact, they were the only starters. This trio will be able to run that race over again in the G.N. St. Leger at Ellerslie on Easter Monday, and there is a prospect of additional opposition with several other horses remaining in this classic. They include Lady Desmond, Phaola and Flying Juliet, and if this half dozen see the post it should be quite an interesting tussle —for second money. Although Hynanna pushed Commendation at Trentham, it is expected that the latter will have been considerably improved since that run, so that he will be a certain favourite at a cramped price. Memories of Silver Link It does not seem as long ago as six years since that bonny mare Silver Link won the Easter Handicap here, but it is, and the fact is recalled by the knowledge that the first of her offspring in the Catmint colt Silvermine is down to contest the Champagne Stakes on Easter Saturday. Silver Link was a brilliant sprinter in her day, and her speed was in no , way diminished by the many times she had taken on Gloaming in several of the classic and weight-for-age events in the southern portion of the North Island. In Silvermine the Boniform mare has given the turf a fine colt, as good on top of the ground as he is in the mud, like most of the Catmint tribe. The youngster is a brilliant galloper, and if not in the first flight is very little removed from it. His two best performances were in the Wellington Stakes and the Taranaki Stakes. In the former event he did not get away too well and then finished a length behind Limited in record time for the five furlongs, and in the Taranaki Stakes he ran The Hawk to a head, and behind him were Grand Knight and Reremoana. Silvermine’s appearance at Ellerslie will be awaited with the keenest interest by those sportsmen who remember his dam, and who like to see a good
youngster. A Disappointment It is not expected that the New Plymouth trainer E. George will race Nastori at Whangarei next week, for the mare has not shown up in her two starts within the last week. At Opunake she was beaten out of a place, and this was put down to bad luck. However, she failed to gain a situation at the Rangitikei meeting on Thursday, when she was racing over her pet distance, five furlongs, and this would probably cause her to be left at home. Nastori’s loss of form is regrettable, for she had been out of action for some time until produced at Woodville recently. Stable In Form The Hawera mentor, Oney Cox, is having a mild run of successes. During the past six weeks he has led in nine winners, including two wins each by Reremoana, Lady Desmond, Lady Bentinck and Acred, and one win by Barryander. Cox should have his team ' prety fit by the time the Ellerslie Easter fixture comes round, for they must be well seasoned with the racing they have been getting down south. Lady Cavendish has yet to run into a place this season, despite the fact that she has been expected in one or two of her contests. When she came to Auckland for the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie at Christmas her connections thought she would do well, but the wet tracks spoilt whatever prospects she may have had. Fashionably Bred After many disappointments the four-year-old mare Ohui, trained at Fordell. by Fred Tilley, came to light
in the short hack race at Bulls on Thursday, and although she was fourth favourite the money for the two favourites poured in so heavily that she was at a fine price. Ohui is a full sister to those good performers Tamatete and Tukia, and like them she has pace to burn, but hitherto she has had to have everything in her favour before she would battle on. Like her relatives, too, she is a brilliant beginner, and, if permitted to run along in front would go kindly, but when she finds something taking her on she would just as soon give in as fight out the issue. Ohui ran differently on Thursday, for the accounts of the race show that she came again after being apparently beaten, and aided by a lucky run on the rails got up to take the thick end of the stake. Naming Royal Feast’s Brother An appropriate name, which will probably be registered for one of this season’s Australian yearlings, is Royal Banquet, for a fine brother to the champion two-year-old Royal Feast. The King Offa —Bunfeast colt was passed at l,2oogns at the Melbourne yearling sales, but was afterwards sold privately to Messrs. C. B. Kellow and W. McCulloch. The owners first applied for the name Banquet, but it had been used before, and as Royal Banquet is available, they will probably give that name to the youngster. Substitution of Jockeys It is quite a common occurrence nowadays for the stewards at Sydney pony meetings to take matters into their own hands and change the riders of certain horses, in an endeavour to protect the public, writes “Poseidon.” On occasions the horses have won, to the delight of their backers, who had been a little uneasy until the the substitution was made. Still, there are times when such changes cause great disappointment to the riders, especially if they are young boys who are just making their way in the game. At Ascot last week the little-known apprentice, A. Cavanough, was to have ridden Queen’s Gift in the FourteenOne Handicap, but before the horses went to the post the stewards ordered the lad to stand down, and they gave Hazel the mount in his place. Cavanough has not done much riding in races, but he gained a considerable amount of experience during a two years’ apprenticeship to S. R. Lamond, Jun. The owner of Queen’s Gift was impressed by his track riding, and as he could claim a 71b allowance, he decided to give him a chance. He states that he invested £SO on Queers Gift before the jockeys were changed. Queen’s Gift ran well, but was beaten by Boy Charlton. English Grand National Sprig was the favourite in London six weeks ago for the Grand National decided at Aintree yesterday, this horse being a couple of points shorter than last year’s winner, Jack Horner, and Master Billie, while another couple of points away was the top weight, Bright’s Boy. A drop of four points saw a big batch on the next mark, those quoted being Grakle, Great fcJpan, Grecian Wave, Knight of the Wilderness, Silver Somme, Thrown In and White Park. The number of horses entered for this trying contest over the biggest “country” in the world was 69, and forfeit was declared on February 1 for 18, so that 51 were left in, and if any of these dropped out subsequently they would have to pay SOsovs, while the starters contribute lOOsovs each to the stake. The field usually numbers round about 30, and (writing before the result has come to hand), assuming that there were 30 starters yesterday, then the Grand National would be worth in all about £10,640, made up as follows: Added money, s,ooosovs; starters’ sweepstake, 3,ooosovs; and forfeits, 2,64050x5. The winner of the race takes 9,19050 vs and a trophy to the value of 200sovs., while the second horse receives 700sovs, third horse 400 sovs, and the fourth horse 150sovs. In addition the trainer of the winner gets a *sosovs cup and the Jockey a cup to the value of 25sovs. Old Tay Bridge was the original topweight for yesterday’s event, 12.7, but on his defection, and others immediately below him, Bright's Boy, 12.2, was left on top, and consequently the weights were raised five pounds all round.
