A CROCHET CAP FOR A CHILD
Very Easy to Make. You require three ounces of double Berlin wool and a medium hook, also thre yards of ribbon 2 A inches wide. For the crown proceed as follows: First row —Seventeen chain. Second row.—Draw wool through each of the last four chain: you will then have five loops on needle. Drawing each a. little longer than the previous one, place wool round needles and draw through the five loops, work one chain—that completes one stitch; draw wool througli the two back threads of stitch just worked, also through the two next main chain, then place wool round needle, draw through all five on needle, and do one chain. Work three more stitches the same; then to increase draw the wool through the two back threads, but only through one of main chain (on last row), giving you four loops on needle instead of five, but it will form two stitches at the top just the same, so that you get it wider at the outsite edge of work. Now work three fan stitches into the next three chain, giving nine fan stitches that side of chain; continue round opposite side of chain, doing four stitches in the first four chain and five in the last ten chain. You now have a double row of fan stitch, round at one end and straight at the other; break off wool. Third row.—Fasten wool into first fan stitch, work three chain, draw wool through two and through the two stitches of fan stitch of last row, drawing wool through five loops again. Continue till you have six of these, then work six stitches into the next three of last row, having only four loops on needle for each of these six stitches; work down second side to match other side. Fourth row.—The same, placing two in each of the middle five of last row. Now you have finished crown of bonnet, unless you want it for a very big child, when you might add one more row round, putting two into the middle six of last row. The front.—Start with two balls of wool, and work a chain of 59 stitches for front, four chain to turn round, miss one of main chain, and work one long treble into second main chain; then work two chain, missing two more main chain, work long treble into next, coming to end of row. (Long treble means taking wool twice round needle.) You should now have 21 1 s. Break of one ball of wool, and do a row of fan stitches along this foundation chain; break off and start again from. right-hand end, and continue this till you have five rows of fan stitches. This will make it deep enough, but one more row might be added if the cap is to be very la.rge.
