RUN OF BAD LUCK

HIT HIS OWN MATE Arthur Conlon, who is 36, and comes from U.S.A., has had a run of very bad luck. To begin with, the war left him with only one leg. Then, some time ago, the spring in his artificial leg broke, and he fell on the concrete in Queen Street and broke his arm. He was having a drink with some friends in a bar the other day when someone butted into the friendly circle. He wouldn’t go when he was told to, and so Conlon, balancing himself on one crutch, used the other to persuade him. Unfortunately the crutch struck the wrong man—James Straker. Conlon’s mate—on the head, necessitating several stitches to repair the damage. In the Magistrate’s Court this morning the blow cost Conlon <£3 10s 6d, the half-guinea being for his friend’s medical expenses.
